When I first came to Japan, I stayed at a friend’s house.
私が初めて日本に来た時，私は友人の家に滞在しました。

I saw a tokonoma － Japanese alcove－ for the first time.
私は床の間，それは日本の家の部屋の壁の一部を引っ込ませて作った小さな空間ですが，それを初めて見ました。

I admired a kakejiku － a scroll with brush writing － that was hanging there.
私は床の間にかかっていた掛け軸，それは毛筆による文字が書かれた巻物ですが，それに見とれました。

My first question was, “What does the scroll say?” And my friend said, “I can’t read it; the characters are too difficult.”
私の最初の質問は「その巻物には，何と書いてあるのですか。」でした。すると，私の友人は，「私には読めないんだよ。そこに書いてある文字は難しすぎるのでね。」と言いました。

American homes also have pictures or wall hangings with writing, but I am sure that most of the people who own these can read what they say.
アメリカ人の家庭にも，文字が書いてある絵あるいは壁掛けがありますが，こういった絵や壁掛けを所有している人たちのほとんどは，そこに書かれているものを読むことができるはずです。

In fact, the hangings are probably chosen for their meaning, not for their beauty. If there is something written, people will try to read it.
実際，そういう壁掛けは，その美しさのためではなく，そこに書いてあることの意義のために，おそらく選ばれているのです。もし，何か書かれたものがあるのなら，人々はそれを読もうとするでしょう。
