Whether we like it or not, the world we live in has changed a great deal in the last hundred years, and it is likely to change even more in the next hundred.
　好もうと好むまいと、私たちが住んでいるこの世界は、この100年間で随分変化してきました、そして次の100年間ではあらにもっと変わりそうです。　

a great deal 随分、大いに be likely to ~ ～しそう

Somepeople would like to stop these changes and go back to what they see as a purer and simpler age.
これらの変化を止めて、より純粋でより単純だと思えていた時代に戻りたいと思う人もいます。　

But as history shows, the past was not that wonderful.
しかし、歴史を見ればわかるように、過去の時代はそれほど素晴らしいものではなかったのです。　

It was not so bad for a privileged minority, though even they had to do without modern medicine, and childbirth was highly risky for women.
少数の特権階級の人にとっては、あまり悪い時代ではありませんでした、最も彼らでさえ、現代医学を利用することはできませんし、女性にとって出産はとても危険なものでした。

But for the vast majority of the population, life was nasty and short.
しかしそれ以外の大部分をしめる多数の人々にとっては、人生は短くて不快なものでした。

Anyway, even if one wanted to, one couldn’t put the clock back to an ealier age.
　とにかく、たとえそうしたいと思っても、昔の時代のやり方に戻ることはできないのです。　

Knowledge and techniques can’t just be forgotten.
知識と科学技術を単に忘れ去ることはできません。　

Nor can one prevent further advances in the future.
そしてまた、将来、さらに進歩することを妨げることもできないのです。　

nor + (助・be)動詞 + 主語　(否定の文[説]の後で)そしてまた～ない

Even if all government money for research were cut off, the force of competition would　still　bring about advances in technology.
たとえ政府の調査費が全て削減されても、それでもなお、競争力によって、科学技術は進歩するでしょう。　

bring about ～を引き起こす

Moreover, one cannot stop inquiring minds from thinking about basic science, whether or not they are paid for it.
さらに、人の心の中にある好奇心によって、基礎的な科学について考えたいと思うことを止めることはできません、たとえそれが割に合っても合わなくてもです。

stop…from ~ing …が～するのを防ぐ、妨げる
